Tellurium

A rare metalloid that is used in solar cells and rewritable CDs. Its named comes from "tellus", meaning earth. Most of earth's tellurium reacted with water to form hydrogen telluride, which has dissipated in space, making it rare in the earth but abundant in the universe.

If it weren’t for water, you would not be holding the life you have today. I understand. Some of them think of you as Gaia. Some of them think of you as Medea. Do they know who you really are?

That time when we were molten together. Being heavy, I should have sunk into the core. The other compounds held on to me. That could be why. These bonds are why I’m more than just a trace for humans.

Do you know where I am now? Neither do I. I’ve scattered in space. When the humans turn their solar panels out here, know that I am looking back at myself.

At what point do we stop becoming I, and we start becoming we? How far did I need to float out through space? At what point can I no longer say I’m an I, being so diffuse? At what point do I say, I am not part of your life anymore?

I’m actually quite generic. I’m actually quite common out here. Unremarkable, really. Many other stars produce what humans call tellurium. But only I am tellurium, named after where I’ve come from.
